Hey, what’s up? Welcome to The Frugal Expats website.
A personal finance blog that chronicles the life of a young expat family and their quest to financial independence – all while living in one of the most expensive countries in the world.
Who’s running the show?
Hello! I am Mr.Frugal Expat (aka Mr. FE) and together with my wife Mrs.Frugal Expat (aka Mrs.FE), we run this blog.
We’re both in our 30’s, born and raised in the Philippines, and proud parents to our adorable 1-year old daughter, Baby FE.
Our little family is currently based in Singapore.
We’re both Engineers and like many young professionals from our home country, we’ve decided to pursue our luck abroad for better career opportunities and to experience the world a little bit more.
We’ve been expats for 6 years now.
More about the website and why we started this
This is mainly a personal finance/financial independence blog.
We’ve created this site to document our own journey towards financial independence (FI).
Our goal is to “retire” from the rat race at the age of 40. You can read more about our Grand Plan here.
Another reason why we’ve launched this blog is to help other expatriates, especially OFWs (Overseas Filipino Workers) and many young professionals who are having a hard time dealing with their finances because of debt or lifestyle inflation.
There’s no shortage of financial horror stories out there, the saddest part is we keep hearing them from people who are close to us – even from those who are earning a relatively good income.
In this site, we’ll share our strategies to help other people get out of those unwanted financial situations.
You’ll be surprised how simple the math is – most of the time, all you really need is a little bit of effort and discipline. (Okay, maybe not that little!)
“Earning a lot of money is not the key to prosperity. How you handle it is.”
— Dave Ramsey
We’re hoping that we can inspire people to embark on their own financial freedom journey and provide applicable financial literacy lessons and strategies along the way.
As for our own FI journey, we’d like to focus more in attaining freedom and flexibility rather than acquiring more and more money. We actually wanted to live and enjoy life more and think less about money. For us, that’s the true meaning of financial independence.
Our Mantra :
Spend less. Live more.
We’d also like to show you that living frugally is more than penny pinching. A frugal lifestyle is an epitome of lifestyle design.
Frugal living is an efficient and intentional way to spend our money and more importantly, our time.
Embracing this lifestyle made us more creative, resourceful, and appreciative of the things we currently have. Sure, there will always be some trade-offs but the most important thing is that you should not feel like you are depriving yourselves.
We hope that through this blog and our own experiences, you will be able to pick-up more than a few golden nuggets that could help you in your own financial journey.
We’ll also cover other core topics like:
- Core Financial Independence Principles
- Money Management (Saving,Earning,Investing)
- Frugal tips & other hacks
- Living in Singapore
- Tips for fellow OFWs
So if you are a fan of no-BS personal finance and practical frugal tips, feel free to dig in!
Thanks for reading. Hope you’ll enjoy it here.
